I worked at UMUC full-time (More than a year)

Pros

The people, professional environment, and even ambiance... Even though that sounds a bit strange! The facilities are all extremely up-dated and technology is second to none.

Cons

Location is not metro-accessible and very difficult to get to if you don't have a car. I probably would not have accepted a job there if I didn't have one.

I worked at UMUC full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Helpful coworkers
    Decent benefits including free parking
Nice newly remodeled offices in Adelphi and up to date office space in Largo
good faculty that provide quality higher education opportunities

    Cons

Restructuring and reorganization have left staff guessing about layoffs
Vision of management not communicated to staff
It seems some departments have a growing budget while others are being cut
No emphasis on growing the careers of the staff through training opportunities
COLA in 2014 is first salary increase for all employees in many years

    Advice to Management

Listen to staff ideas rather than keep the status quo. At times management does not appear willing to change for the better. Applying bells and whistles does not address the communication issues.

    Negative Outlook

    I worked at UMUC full-time

    Pros

    Maryland state government benefits
    Nice looking office
    Flexible hours
    Work from home

    Cons

IT is losing good people faster than they can hire them. The people they don't lose are labeled as useless and no attempt is made to increase their skills or motivate them. Instead contractors are brought in to do the work. Groups doing modern technology appear to be there to work around older groups. Jive is used for collaboration but appears mainly to be a place to broadcast messages and not do anything that might cause offense to someone. HR is near worthless. After 8 months there my benefits that I signed up for were still not correct nor my hire date. If high-level end users must be appeased, good contractors are used, knowing that they will have to then be fired as the end user will never be satisfied. Big plans, few that can deliver.

    Advice to Management

Management needs to grow a spine. If told to lie to employees, refuse to do it.
