I worked at US Agricultural Research Service full-time (More than 10 years)

Pros

With right staffing and personnel, the job can be extremely satisfying. Exposure to dealing with Congress and Office of the President gives great sense of accomplishment. Acquired knowledge and hands on the whole US government budget process may lead to better salary jobs in private industry, Office of the President, and Congress.

Cons

My position was under the Office of the Secretary. At that level and as expected, politics may get in the way of accomplishing the goals mandated by your program. Extremely territorial between the agencies like if they were independent entities and not a part of one Department. With the wrong leadership, what should be a highly gratifying job, becomes unbearable and highly stressful.

Advice to Management

Force agencies to work as part of one department regardless of anecy lines.
