I have been working at US Air Force full-time (More than 10 years)

Pros

-- Hands down, the education I have received in the military is worth the service and frequent moves for my family.
-- Many chances to live in new locations
-- Better quality of life (for myself and family) relative to other services

Cons

-- Some of the bases are in less than desirable locations
-- Sadly, I have seen some hard workers kicked out for failing to maintain physical standards (part of the game though...)
-- The recent joint basing efforts have stripped away some of the Air Force identity

I worked at US Air Force full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The people are the best part. I have made a number of connections in my time spent in the Air Force.

    Cons

The constant competition between work and family. This is one of the reasons that I decided to walk away. The military needed me to deploy and my family needed me at home. When it comes down to it, my family will ALWAYS come first.

    Advice to Management

Know your people. If you know your people, then the ability to get the mission accomplished is so much easier than if you just see them as another employee.

I have been working at US Air Force full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    - mission focused
    - wide range of projects
    - chance to be interdisciplinary in your engineering approach
    - chance for worldwide travel
    - job security, but this is true of most all federal jobs

    Cons

    - dealing with the political whims of Congress
    - you will most likely be closer to funding decisions than you would be in the private sector
    - contracting for goods and services is extremely cumbersome due to acquisition law

    Advice to Management

Don't be afraid to communicate with your employees. Even what you tell them may be painful, they still want to know what is going on. Even if you don't know, tell them that as well.
