I have been working at US Army full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The opportunity to test yourself in every area and find out what you're made of, to belong to something pure and larger than yourself that will help shape and define you for the rest of your life, to experience things that 90% of Americans will never see, to have access to the best training and equipment in the world, to take advantage of some of the best benefits offered to any group of Americans. The ability to choose your job based on qualifications. Amount of off-time.

    Cons

Low pay in the initial ranks; long hours; work days subject to subjective and fluid mission requirements; little influence over duty station locations; merit-based, rather than performance-based, promotion system

    Advice to Management

In order to retain more talent and suffer less loss of officers at the 6-8 year mark and enlisted at the 6-10 year mark, change the recognition and promotion system to give more weight to peer, subordinate, and superior performance reviews and reward "out-of-the-box" thinking. Promote morale development first and then establish consistent performance standards.
