Pros

This is an organization that pretty much gives you what you put into it. You'll be recognized for good performance.

Cons

Because there is such a structured promotion system that is based on over inflated evaluations there area fair number of truly incompetent leaders within the organization. Usually these leaders are members of other organization that lend some type of top cover for nefarious behavior.

Advice to Management

The management already understands these issues. However, changing the Army is like turning a battleship, it just takes time.

I worked at US Army full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great place to learn quickly and with a lot of responsibility. If you have the desire to learn and are a self-starter, you will flourish.

    Cons

Endless cycle of moving from post to post. Korea, Texas, Kuwait, Afghanistan, and around and around.

    Advice to Management

Root out Mid-level toxic leadership. Find a way to keep the great officers and let go of the bottom 20%. Too many of the greats leave for civilian careers.

  2. "Great opportunities and experiences, but be prepared to "suck it up" a lot!"

    Doesn't Recommend

I have been working at US Army full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Camaraderie is not rivaled anywhere else
Travel and experiences are highly unique
    Training can be invaluable
    Mission can be extremely rewarding

    Cons

Huge bureaucracy makes getting things done next to impossible
Little freedom to self express and do things as an individual would
Still pretty sexist; men are more likely to move up the ladder in career due to the way the Army is structured and culture
Senior leadership is often far removed from reality
