I worked at US Census Bureau part-time (Less than a year)

Pros

Dynamic work environment
Pay is good for a temp job
You can work your way up fairly easily if you take the exams in some offices, but not all

Cons

I found the regional offices, which have a lot of contact with the local offices, to make decisions affecting the local offices based on inadequate knowledge of field conditions and in general they were a burden instead of a help to the smaller offices.

Advice to Management

I worked in two offices and neither one asked for resumes when deciding to promote office staff from within. This resulted in people with inadequate backgrounds being promoted. Just because someone is good at one kind of job doesn´t mean they´ll be good at another type and in this kind of operation you don´t have enough time to figure that out unless you check the resume. Also, don´t change your mind at the regional level EVERY DAY about things to be done. It is stressful for everyone involved and makes us look incompetent to the public.

    Pros

The Team Leader was very friendly and generous, training was very thorough and easy to understand, you could make your own hours

    Cons

Some people were rude and not happy to answer the questions but the Team Leaders would usually handle people that were very negative.

I have been working at US Census Bureau part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

flexible schedule, security on grounds, able to work with people of different abilities (vision, hearing, non-walking difficulties, etc), not a typical call center environment

    Cons

benefits not available or the requirements are so specific that only a limited population of employees are eligible, opportunity for promotion/increased responsibility can be improved, having to take the verbal abuse of the US population while they do NOT have omniscient knowledge about the federal government
