Pros

Federal employment is a safe and stable place to work. Pay increases are typically provided regularly. Performance goals are usually easily achieved

Cons

Promotion potential is based on tenure within the federal system, not on knowledge or abilities. Federal retention rules make it nearly impossible for non-performers to be removed from the system.

Advice to Management

When hiring from the private sector, the high achievers look for responsibility, advancement opportunities and meaningful recognition. They expect more open lines of communication. You must be flexible in order to maintain top performers. Low performers will be content to do the minimum and not improve your operations.

I have been working at US Citizenship and Immigration Services full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The mission of USCIS is an admirable one. The deployment of this agency's mission could be re-vamped, as some of it's internal processes are archaic. Quality of life really depends on the supervisor you work under. If you have a great supervisor, then you may also have a great work experience. If you have a bad supervisor, expect unnecessary difficulty accomplishing mission goals. USCIS is one of the best agencies to advance quickly up the chain.

    Cons

QOL is based solely on the supervisor you work for. If you have a bad supervisor, expect to have a bad professional experience.

    Advice to Management

Empower employees to do the job you hired them to do - minimize the micromanagement
