I worked at US Coast Guard full-time (More than 10 years)

Pros

Real, meaningful work, including saving lives, protecting property, maritime security, environmental stewardship. Small office, so everyone has a chance to contribute in multiple ways, and you can develop and stretch skills and experiences.

Cons

Underfunded. Understaffed. Always having to make tough trade-offs between worthy demands on limited resources.

Advice to Management

Be more clear about the precious few priorities, and communicate them often, as it seems they change frequently, depending upon the political climate.

I have been working at US Coast Guard full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Coast Guard headquarters is a great place to work. The Coast Guard has a great mission and management is generally family friendly.

    Cons

As GS, white collar, employee, you will generally make less than support contractors. This really a federal employment issue. In the Summer of 2013, the Coast Guard will move to the Saint Elizabeth's campus in SE DC, which poses some commuting problems if you don't ride the metro or have a van/car pool.
