I have been working at US Coast Guard full-time (More than 10 years)

Pros

Great camaraderie and sense of team work. Great benefits including educational benefits. If you enlist for 4 years you should be able to get a BA/BS in that time without touching your GI bill. Great leadership skills development. You get to move every four years

Cons

Budget cuts are making it tougher to advance or promote. The Coast Guard always seems to fall back into the do more with less mentality. You will always find yourself reminding everyone the Coast Guard is one of the FIVE armed forces.

I have been working at US Coast Guard full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The Coast Guard offers excellent health and retirement benefits as well as family support, work life balance, telework, and stability. Coast Guard bases have gyms, cafeterias, exchanges, clinics, ball fields, etc.

    Cons

As a federal agency, the Coast Guard is at the whim of the annual federal budget cycle, which can make projects difficult to plan from year to year. Currently facing possible sequestration impact.

I worked at US Coast Guard full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great benefits, much is provided for you beyond a normal job, including educational benefits.

    Cons

Crazy hours, very mechanistic, centralized organization with little freedoms. Can spend months at sea, depending on your billet. Sometimes very hard work.
