Positive Outlook

I have been working at US Defense Intelligence Agency full-time (More than 5 years)

Pros

Nice place to work with good people, good management, and helps keep everyone safe.

People do not understand the job, but think they do. They need to listen to examiner only.

Advice to Management

Continue to back up your people. Hard job at times.

    Pros

Getting a foot in the door in federal government. Job benefits. Interesting work. Occasional opportunities to travel. Great professional experience.

    Cons

Absolutely untrained, unmotivated front line supervisors so busy managing up they forget to lead. Tendency to run lower level ragged or leaving them stagnant...no productive in between.

    Advice to Management

Don't have any advice for the management of the US Defense Intelligence Agency. Keep up the fight and we are all better for you being on the watch. Thanks.

    Doesn't Recommend

    Pros

    - Job security
    - Important mission and opportunities to have a positive impact on national issues
    - Subject matter can be very interesting

    Cons

    - A culture of mediocrity and crippling bureaucracy making having a positive impact nearly impossible
    - Starting salaries are barely living wages in the DC area, especially if you have student loans
    - Mid-level managers are counting down the days to retirement and would rather not be bothered
    - Training programs are a joke

    Advice to Management

Stop trying to recreate what others parts of the US government are already doing (and doing better than you). Decide what your core competencies are and then actually invest in your people enough for them to do those competencies well.
