I have been working at US Department of Defense Office of Inspector General full-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

Good pay and benefits
Relaxed atmosphere
Good people
Lots of opportunities for travel to foreign countries that most people don't get (Afghan., Iraq)
Job security
Looks good on a resume
On-site gym

Cons

Report process is pretty annoying
Not sure if all reports are very meaningul or if anyone really even cares
Bad people (just a lot of weird people)
I doubt you learn as much as private industry
Parking lot to desk is about 10 minutes

Advice to Management

Make sure the work is meaningful and will have an impact before deciding to report.
Hire more cool people or more smart people. Currently , there are a lot of nerds that aren't even smart.

I have been working at US Department of Defense Office of Inspector General full-time

    Pros

Diverse organization with a great mission, protecting the warfighter. Ample opportunity for advancement and a committment to employee development.

    Cons

Too many chiefs and not enough indians. Frequently, program offices are 1 deep. Additionally, the organization is fragmented and various components seem work against other compoents, especially when leadership agendas are not aligned.

    Advice to Management

Live up to the motto on the DoD OIG Intranet site "A Diverse Organization Working as One Team", and hold Senior Exectives and middle managers accountable when they fail to demonstrate that attitude.

  2. Helpful (4)

"My experience at the OIG was very interesting and disappointing."

    Pros

    Interesting work
    Opportunity to make a difference

    Cons

Claims to be family oriented but lacks flexibility and understanding for working mothers.
Senior management lacks fairness and objectivity, and down right ruthless if they dont like you.
The good ol boy network is still in place.

    Advice to Management

Eliminate entire Auditing division to include the Deputy IG.
