I have been working at US Department of Defense full-time (More than 5 years)

Pros

Paid OT. Work weeks are 40 hrs only. All federal holdays are paid. There are 13 paid sick days a year. Great environment for white, conservative, Christian males (ideally older > 50yrs of age).

Cons

It's like an episode of mad men w/o the alcohol and smoking. It's a pretty racist, sexist, bigoted environment. They removed the colored water fountains but the mentality stayed. This is not a good environment for any minority including women.

I worked at US Department of Defense as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Outstanding salary, with upgrades to war zone service.

    Cons

Was injured at work, before attaining the magic permanent status. In addition, I left a high paying position with a contractor, based on DOD need and promises. As soon as I was headed overseas, after my office fought for over 6 months to get me for specific skills, the higher ups cancelled the position and would have sent me home jobless, but I was hurt about a month before the cancellation was announced. Uncle Sam does NOT follow the Worker's Comp rules they make everyone else follow.

    Pros

Ability to communicate and shape national defense policy
Work-life balance considered important by senior leaders

    Cons

Information is power, and some senior leaders hoard it.
Senior leaders sometimes more focused on management rather than inspired leadership

    Advice to Management

    Strive to inspire!
