I worked at US Department of Energy full-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

Jobs at DOE cover a large spectrum from policy to quantitative analytics to national security. Once you get in, you have many opportunities to explore and grow. There are some super smart people. Find them.

Cons

ah, its the Federal Government and DOE has its share of career who don't give a hoot about being innovative or taking chances. Ignore them. Some of the bureaucracy can be annoying.

Advice to Management

DOE is pretty good at attracting smart, young people, but it needs to get better at retaining them.

    I have been working at US Department of Energy full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Flexible work schedule. flexibility in attending seminars. Easier access to management. Less stovepipe than Dept. of Defense.

    Cons

    It’s all about personalities and attitude, who's who and what degree from where in lieu of focusing on products, deliverables and outcomes. Has internal focus on its own ideas with little effort to adopt external benchmarks. An excuse such as Science is one of its primary missions, therefore DOE is different from other departments, and products/deliverables are “tactical in nature “while “strategic thinking" is the desired outcome!!! Training and development of their employees are lacking. No upward mobility unless you know how to tap dance around senior management, or you are from the labs.

    Advice to Management

    Seek advice on how to change the culture. Enforce rotational assignment across career employees and make it a mandatory for upward mobility. Ensure performances and award are focused on deliverables, results and outcomes. Develop programs to improve employee skills.
