I worked at US Department of Homeland Security full-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

The DHS Management Component has great work exposure to all of the DHS Components. The Senior Executives I meet or work for were top notch. Pay was good.

Cons

DHS and especially the newer Components are still maturing and solidifying their mission space. Where Component missions over lap or are unclear there is a lot of extra effort needed just to sort things and before the work is started. Every year is gets easier.

Advice to Management

Stability. The political turn offer is expected and even normal. However, with such a young organization it can cause a lot of extra effort to adjust.

I have been working at US Department of Homeland Security full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Job security is strong. There is plenty of room to grow in the beginning of your career.

    Cons

The growth room exponentially decreases until at the point where you're waiting for people to retire, or willing to relocate to a new area. The technical expertise is extremely lacking in all facilities I've worked, where those who are always on the forefront of upcoming technologies will feel bored. At one facility the developers were forced to work on Windows XP until 2014.
