I worked at US Department of State as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Interesting, meaningful and sometimes quite exciting work; smart people, especially in POL and ECON; opportunities to travel around the world; included and paid intensive language training; etc.

    Cons

Very bureaucratic -- less so in POL and ECON, but still gets in the way of efficiency decently often. The foreign service lifestyle is great for the right type of adventurous and outgoing family, but can be problematic if your spouse is not the adventurous type, has not traveled much in the past, and/or has little interest in traveling, experiencing new cultures and meeting new people.

I worked at US Department of State as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

    - Shadowing and working alongside intelligent, insightful, and interesting people (both FSOs and foreign nationals)
    - Engaging with the local population in myriad ways in support of US policy; it was a way to dive into another culture while also analyzing your own culture in a new context
    - Having the opportunity to pitch your own ideas and actively contribute; interns are active members of the FS dynamic, not passive observers
    - Unparalleled access into the Foreign Service career/lifestyle to decide if it's right for you

    Cons

    - Internships are unpaid and require you to find your own housing without much guidance (though this might vary from post to post)
