Pros

The best reason to work for US DOT is the core mission of all the modes is to save lives.

Cons

The US DOT still works in a vaccum. They have not grasped the importance of collaboration - an extension of partnership. Partnerships in the "real" world are when you share common goals with another agency or organization but use your own separate means to get there. Collaboration is when you work together to achieve those goals. DOT tends to work on an island by themselves and not with others. Another issue with DOT is an aging population who have been placed in management and therefore has positioned others in key positions based on personal preferences. Nepotism is very prevalent in this agency.

Advice to Management

It appears that the political appointees of this Administration "gets it". They understand what it takes to suceed and how to structure the organization by employing and retaining a skilled workforce. I hope they are able to keep the momentum to change DOT into the great agency it has the potential to become.

    Pros

If you want to acquire experience from a National level, it is the place to be! You get a lot of exposure on the transportation industry. From a working level, the agency offers average salaries, but the benefits are the best. Good opportunities for getting training and experience.

    Cons

very limited positions at the field level. Mobility and relocations are a must (their culture) to get a promotion. If you are the mobile type, this is for you. The best locations are the hard to get. A lot of competition. Even working at the government, there is a culture and you will know soon if you have been welcomed to the family.

    Advice to Management

Please keep the employees informed of top level decisions.
