I have been working at US Department of Veterans Affairs full-time (Less than a year)

Pros

Great benefits; flex hrs; great training; great advancement opportunities if you're a veteran.

Cons

Hard to get a position if you're not currently an employee/veteran/other gov't employee. Leadership is lacking. Change is not accepted very well. Some of management thinks they are still in the military (literally barking out orders) and yelling and belittling other employees in front of one another.

Advice to Management

We are all people, which means we can all learn and benefit from each other. If management commands more of their employees, they should first command more of themselves.

    Growing Department with Administration support, four-year Secretary entering a new term provides leadership continuity

    Cons

    strong military culture and bias toward veterans in the workplace, huge organization makes it hard to get things done, resistance to change

    Advice to Management

    Hiring veterans is important, but constant focus on veteran hiring can alienate non-veterans who comprise the majority of the workforce; leadership has very low visibility into inner workings of departments

    federal workforce is diverse and hard working, commtted to veteran's

    Cons

    leadership is old fashioned top down and very demoralizing. They discredit workers and want to make a name for themselves

    Advice to Management

    Practice what you preach, i.e transparency, shared decision making
