I worked at US Department of Veterans Affairs full-time (More than a year)

Pros

You get to perform worthwhile work for a group of people that deserve the best you can give them. Working on the healthcare-side of things, the patients are often extremely grateful for your dedication to them. Good access to technology.

Cons

Seniority may be valued a bit too highly; things can be slow to change. The buildings can be quite old.

Advice to Management

Value the new blood you bring in and help everyone achieve a good work-life balance.

I have been working at US Department of Veterans Affairs full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

A true honor to help Combat Veterans. Good hard working, committed, skilled staff. Minimul paperwork. Excellent Upper Management, empathic, intelligent and highly supportive of staff. Upper Leadership at this time is the best I have ever seen in my career.

    Cons

Upper management tolerates incompetant, abusive Team Leaders and ignores staff complaints. Team leaders do not seem to be supervised and are allowed to use their Vet Centers as thier personal feifdoms. Some Team leaders are devisive, splitting staff, rewarded those who agree with them, and encourage staff to tattle on others. A very difficult situation to work in. Vet Centers have no union coverage, employees fear losing thier jobs in a poorly managed Vet Center.

    Advice to Management

Listen to staff complaints. Begin to address team leader problems. Recognize how staff complaints are expressed in a desire to improve the program, and not dismiss them.

I have been working at US Department of Veterans Affairs full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Stable job, very hard to get fired, cannot get called off of work, 5 weeks vacation annually, strong mission statement when caring for veterans, they have benefits which include health insurance and a very small pension. People who work at the VA tend to really care about veterans and most co-workers support each other.

    Cons

Unrealistic work loads at times, disconnect from upper management, very little recognition for strong employees especially in nursing. Everyone is treated the same even if you are a horrible worker so strong nurses have to make up for the slack of the bad ones. You are scolded if you call in sick. Pay is lower than other hospitals and dont expect raises for cost of living. No paid maternity leave.

    Advice to Management

Take some time to actually listen to your employees. Don't just make it all about the bottom line or about becoming an accredited hospital. Find a way to reward the exemplary employees, talk to the workers and give them a voice.
