I worked at US Department of Veterans Affairs as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

You get to do a job that is contributing to providing care for veterans, the people are, for the most part, very nice (some crappy personalities, but you'll get that anywhere), always a possibility for advancement.

    Cons

Lots and lots of bureaucracy that must be dealt with, and sometimes they view things with a very narrow insider focus, which can inhibit change.

    Negative Outlook

I worked at US Department of Veterans Affairs full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Job Security
    Good Benefits
    Great for Veterans

    Cons

    Hostile & Dysfunctional Workplace
Job Security can be bad because it is a system that makes it almost impossible to let go of people that should be let go, which ruins things for everyone
If you are not a Veteran it is more difficult to advance

    Advice to Management

Be more selective in who you hire and be willing to let go of employees that deserve to be let go
