I have been working at US Department of Veterans Affairs full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Working with interesting Medical researchers many of whom have joint appointments at the University of Washington. Work that is interesting and variegated. Plenty of opportunity to learn more if you are self motivated. The great majority of your fellow employees like being there, so if you work well with others you can easily deal with the security restrictions (see Cons, below), fully satisfying them while still getting your work done in a timely manner.

    Cons

You will be working at a Federal Institution, which can be bureaucratic at times. In addition, you will have to pay close attention to the need for security, particularly security as it relates to HIPAA and Patient Identifiable information where relevant, and as it relates to computer equipment deployment, upkeep, use, upgrading, and replacement. Many things must be done according to rules that come down "from above", and this can prove onerous.

    Advice to Management

Remain open to employees' complaints about the difficulties of doing jobs in a timely manner given the needs for security I've noted, and help as much as possible to ease the situations that arise.
