I have been working at US Department of Veterans Affairs full-time (Less than a year)

Pros

You have to love the mission of the VA, serving veterans who served the US. Pay, benefits, etc are all competitive. Good work/life balance and you get out of it what you put in.

Cons

Bureaucracy, difficulties with VA patients navigating the system.

    Pros

    Good starting pay
    Great job security
    Can transfer to any facility in the U.S.
    Lots of leave accrual
    Schedule is flexible

    Cons

    Many people retire there so few opportunities for advancement.

    Once you reach your last step increase in grade your the only additional funds one gets is through cost of loving and bonuses.

    Difficult to change operational systems due to policies and bureaucracies.

    Despite getting an advance degree while employed, compensation is not provided in an increase of pay.

    Advice to Management

    Be open to new and fresh ideas

    Pay your advance degree providers more.

    At the mercy of the government making decisions based on numbers and not always based on people.

    Hold employees accountable and expect people to perform the full scope of their job description. Be supportive of those who do work hard. Put people first.
