I have been working at US Department of Veterans Affairs as a contractor (Less than a year)

Pros

Flexible work schedule - telework 3 days a week

Cons

Slightly "behind-the-times" technology
Mostly retired military, which means there's not much work getting done

Advice to Management

Not really. The VA is such an important entity for Veterans, the mission and vision seems relevant.

I worked at US Department of Veterans Affairs as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

To help vets, as well Experience!

    Cons

The challenges were poor leadership skills. Medical Administrative Services are full of crap, the leadership is poor, management shares information with non management staff members(Cross all you T's and Dot all your I's) Rather calling out from work or receiving counseling statements. This Department is really good with Displaying False interviews. Just know if you were to receive an interview over the phone, you are not the selected candidate (Someone in that department has already applied and will get the the position) As a Intern You will NOT be respected as a employee. These people have worked with each other for years so problems have been around and it is so easy to get caught up in the cross fire by yous speaking to the next person. Staff Members view you as a" INTERN" regardless if the amount of workload is even. Management likes to sweep major problems under the rug until the union (for regular staff) gets involve. Make sure you have a back up plan far as Employment, some Interns get hired on Right away and some departments just use you to catch them up .A few CHIEFS will Gate Keep you so you would be available for their success(Allowing their numbers to look good for monthly meetings) but not supportive for you (Exts are dialed daily).I do not believe that every department is like this but please if your a Intern make sure you have a back up plan.

    Advice to Management

I feel that it would be best for HR to have a monthly chat with their interns with any problems that they may have

I worked at US Department of Veterans Affairs as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

    Reasonable modest pay and benefits.

    Cons

Lack of organizational integrity and much in-fighting and agendas.

    Advice to Management

People are not numbers. Much of the VA's problems would be solved by having a single-person-management system. Each Veteran has their own VA Case Worker whose mission is to help them navigate the system and understand each veteran's potention as well as limitations.
