I have been working at US Department of Veterans Affairs full-time

    Pros

Security of working for a government agency.

    Cons

Favoritism, nepotism, and incompetent managers are the norm.

    Advice to Management

There is no accountability for the negative actions of incompetent supervisors. I had an abusive hostile lying supervisor, took the problem to upper management, and no one cared. The Union had an open ear and claimed they were aware of the problem but did nothing to stop the HWE. I was being discriminated against because I was an older male and the supervisor preferred his young woman who he could dominate and control.

There are some good people who work at the VA and feel the same way I did but did not have the ability to make the move and leave. There is a good reason why so many people leave the VA, because the work environment will literally suck the life out of you. On a very large scale the employee morale at the VA is extremely low. Think twice before you place your future in their hands. If you want to work for the government pick a different agency and you will be better off.

I worked at US Department of Veterans Affairs full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Job stability, pay, helping vets

    Cons

Terrible unethical management, They have a list of policies and procedures for you to follow, but management chooses what to follow. I have personally witnessed violation of due process and lack of regard for any ethics, laws. As a Social Worker, you are marginalized if you speak your mind (as a social worker should). Even after all of this VA stuff in the news, the management still says they provide "exceptional healthcare and their VAC is the best. Denial and deceptive practices keep this place in operation. My advice, if you have a brain and think for yourself, stay away and find
something else. It is all about numbers and bonuses.

    Advice to Management

Nothing, they don't listen to you
