I worked at US Marine Corps full-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

Steady pay and benefits
Housing provided
Opportunity to serve country
Become disciplined
Learn new skills or trades depending upon what job you enlist for
The respect and admiration of a grateful nation

Cons

Have to live where they tell you
Deployments can be rough
Competitive promotion system sometimes results in people getting denied reenlistment and getting pushed out.

Advice to Management

Adopt a more bottom to the top management style, rather than top to bottom. Marine Corps leadership is effective, but at times it is unnecessarily painful.
