I worked at US Marine Corps as a contractor (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Solid beneftis. Solid pay. Great locations to work if you are under any circumstance than the job I had. Do not become a Landing Support Specialist! Stay in great shape. Shoot rifles. Travel.

    Cons

time away from family. you get yelled at and threaten constantly. Leadership is a "do as I say, not as I do" type. Senior SNCO's are few and far between that will fight for you . Officers tend to not really care about their men at all.

    Advice to Management

Be fair. Be firm. Really get to know your Marines. Know about them before you pull the trigger on hurting their career.

I worked at US Marine Corps full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great pay and benefits, very easy job day to day (dependent on MOS), great opportunities for advancement (dependent on MOS), plenty of time off (dependent on individual command).

    Cons

Near dictatorial powers of leadership (very bad if you have a very bad command, possibly good if you have a very good command), many individuals in high positions are promoted there due to physical shape and bureaucratic competence with minimal regard paid to managerial skill or job competence, deployments, ridiculous rules enforced for no other reason than "tradition", leadership as a generality treating lower enlisted (E-5 and below) as children with no capacity for rational thought and decision making, mass punishments, little privacy for single junior Marines.

    Advice to Management

Stop assuming lower enlisted are morons, enough with the mass punishments, treat a Marine's barracks room as a home and not a space which may be invaded at a whim, change the promotion system to favor job skills and managerial skill over physical strength and shooting skills when the individual's job does not relate directly.
