I worked at US Marine Corps full-time (More than 5 years)

Pros

Honor, Courage and Commitment; lived by these rules every day; Very structured, tight group of friends; Any decent NCO's and Staff NCO's will push you to get promoted and help ensure you have success in the Corps, that said they will NOT coddle you.

Cons

When some decisions didn't jive, really couldn't question the validity of said decisions; Sometimes tough to get vacation time in order; Sometimes you could get a jerk on a power trip one rank higher than you...just have to work past it; Also "voluntold" opportunities are usually unpleasant.

I have been working at US Marine Corps full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

A sense of purpose. It's great to be in a uniform though and do something meaningful. The on the job training in terms of leadership and interpersonal relationships cannot be beat.

    Cons

There is a lot of time wasted, and resources mismanaged. It seems like the top 10% leave on their own accord, the bottom 10% are forced out, and you're left with middling leaders.

    Advice to Management

Give Marines more latitude in choosing their career path. It is so rigid right now in terms of the wickets you need to hit.
