I have been working at US National Guard part-time (More than 5 years)

Pros

Opportunities to train with business leaders. Minimal investment in time during dwell periods. Enlisted opportunities for active guard positions are vast.

Cons

State's budget somewhat controls officers' positions. Officer responsibilities for planning occupy time above beyond and outside the 1 weekend a month tagline.

Advice to Management

Convert all staff positions to AGR. The costs of the staff salaries is an investment in providing quality time for whole staff cohesion. The payoff is reduction in time for staff integration and MDMP training during the premobilization process.

I worked at US National Guard as a contractor (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - You can be trained on a lot of cool equipment, weapons, and combat tactics, and get alot of experiences using the equipment/weapons.

    - You are trained on physical fitness and get to participate in a lot of activities that will increase your physical and mental ability.

    - Sometimes you get to travel to different countries, and have some experiences that you would never have if you were not in the service.

    - It looks good on your resume when you are applying to certain positions.

    Cons

    - There is no personal freedom, or privacy, you are there to serve and do what you are told and that is all, you must obey everything you are told and are not allowed to question anything you are told to do because it is an order.

    - You have to shave your face completely clean with a razor every day, the only type of facial hair you can sport is a mustache, and you have to either shave your head or have a high and tight hair cut.

    - The food sucks.

    - You have to be around people, and work with people that you might dislike, and take orders from people that you have no respect for.

    - It is not something you can simply just walk away from if you decide its not what you want to do, you have to be ready to face some consequences.

    - Some places you might apply to later in life may discriminate against your experience, because they might be a more liberal, laid back company. And they may think that because you were a soldier, that you are too strict or that you will not fit in because you may have a more militant state of mind.

    Advice to Management

Most of the people who were in a leadership position, were good people and worthy of that kind of responsibility. Some of the people had mental issues and that sort of thing needs to be investigated and watched a little more, and should not be tolerated.
