"Teaching at the Naval Academy- great job if you can get it"

I worked at US Navy full-time (More than a year)

Pros

Shore duty in Annapolis- great family life and beautiful location. Fun to teach and share sea stories with future officers. Plenty of opportunities for improving your education or doing research with other USNA faculty. Peers are all professional.

Cons

Occasional IA roulette. Routinely get the call that you might be nominated to go to Afghanistan. Sometimes class work/teaching seems trivial compared to work you've done in the fleet. If not a permanent faculty member, then you're not going to be at the Academy long enough to effect significant change or improvements to curriculum.

    Cons

Sometimes long hours and extended travel periods. Time away from family.

    Advice to Management

Be more conscious of the effects of time away from home

I worked at US Navy full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

There are a lot of benefits to being in the Navy. Decent pay, medical and dental care, and good family support. Good people.

    Cons

Excessive hours (sometimes you wont sleep for a day or two, depending on your watch schedule). A long time away from home. Of course, this comes with the job description, and is something that you should be aware of before signing up.) Currently downsizing, letting go of a lot of good people.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your sailors, and remember that without them, there would be no Navy.
