Pros

Advancement opportunities in certain career fields. Good pay for working positions. Incentive pays for special programs. Allowances are not taxed. Support your country.

Cons

A lot of time away from home. Unstable schedule. Hard on family life. Depending on career field it can be dangerous.

Advice to Management

Relax, don't play to the lowest denominator. Don't try to please everybody.

I worked at US Navy full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

See the word, adventure abound. Steady paycheck. Uniform with a superhero cape. Defend freedom and democracy around the world. Take on real challenges civilians will never face, especially at 20 years old.

    Cons

Nobody cares about the enlisted man's needs. The needs of the Navy always come first. You will spend most of your time at sea, and when in home port, most of your time on the ship. Every 6th day you will have to stay aboard the ship no matter what is going on in your life (literally my apartment had burned down the night before, and my wife was on her own to handle it, because I had duty).
Foreign deployment is the only rewarding part of being a sailor.

    Advice to Management

Skippers can earn stars without driving their sailors to hang themselves from the yard arms. Let the guys blow off some steam when home. And for Christ's sake, no less than 8 section duty.
