I have been working at US Navy full-time (More than 10 years)

Pros

The opportunities are endless, your coworkers become family @ smaller commands, the pride you feel for serving your Country is priceless, the skills you develop through schools and on the job training will last you a lifetime and would break the bank if you paid out of pocket.

Cons

Difficult on family life in some ways.

I worked at US Navy full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great benefits, great pay after a few years, opportunity to see many new places, pursue a college degree using tuition assistance. 30 leave days each year.

    Cons

Time away from family is probably the worst thing. After a while you will get used to it and it won't be so bad.

    Advice to Management

    Don't micro-manage.

I worked at US Navy full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great stability, great benefits and great work-life balance. Working for the US Government is great for anyone thinking longterm.

    Cons

For any young Engineers looking for a place to learn, there is definitely potential for good experience, provided that you end up in a group that is as such. However, more than likely you will end up in a group where there is little development and a lot of busy work.

    Advice to Management

Given the next wave of retirement of the previous generation, there will be a drain of institutional knowledge in the coming years and there should be more of an effort to provide competitive incentives for younger talent to consider civil service (not necessarily in salary, but other creative ways like better programs geared towards training and development).
