    I worked at US Navy full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    A great opportunity to travel and see the world, meet life-long friends and have access to technical training and personal development.

    Cons

    The Navy's viewpoint on "equality" is every person regardless of capability is equal. There is a huge push to reach racial quotas in technical fields without considering educational backgrounds. We have seen ASVAB requirements drop for Advanced Technical Fields from 90 to 75 then to 50 then to 'need a waiver.' This means the Navy has people working in Intelligence and IT that can not understand what they are reading in tech manuals and can not mentally understand the implications of written policy.

    The Navy is falling apart, and this is very obvious to anyone driving through a base or shipyard. Although funding is at all time highs, current leadership has no idea how to sustain the infrastructure it is responsible for. Grass is overgrown, buildings are falling apart, parking lots are returning to gravel.

    Advice to Management

    The Navy's Equal Opportunity policy has been hijacked by extremists, get it back in order. It is extremely difficult to run a watch floor when you can not rely on half the people assigned to it to do their jobs. It is also absolutely the most evil thing to put a person in a position where they will never excel but will face increasingly difficult situations as they advance in their careers and level of responsibility.

    Quit expecting to line your pockets as a government contractor when you retire and do your duty. Almost every problem in the Navy could be solved by training and using sailors to fix the ships and bases.. for example, need a marine welder? Tuition Assistance covers that training program, why not send sailors to get real training and then use them instead of paying General Dynamics $750/hour for their welder?
