I have been working at US Patent and Trademark Office full-time (More than a year)

Pros

Protecting the public from ridiculous "inventions" and stupid attorney who will do anything to get a patent through is a good feeling.
Reading up on the latest patent application filed and searching for prior art.
Overall intellectually stimulating work.
Very FLEXIBLE work hours with standard paid time off and sick leaves.
Collegial work environment for the most part.
Promotions based on merit not brown nosing or bias.
Do not have to worry about an overpaid CEO stuffing their own pay while cutting your job...in fact "job security" is listed on their website as a job benefit.
Good pay once you get into the higher gs13-15 levels + maximum paid overtime = slightly over $160/year.

Cons

So much to do and it never ever stops! And there is a quota system.
sometimes finding art can take seemingly forever
management can be a little fickle and the ease of your work life is directly dependent on your supervisor
Nearby cost of living is high.
Federal sequester is coming.

Advice to Management

Some supervisors micromanage a little too much.

    Pros

-Flexiblity: It is simply impossible for a job to be more flexible, especially when working from home. With a few dabbled exceptions (some attorney interviews or meeting, which for me are excedingly rare) your time is completely your own. If you miss waking up at noon from college, you can do it again (and work late).
-Salary and Promotion: Started at 48K, and less than six years later (and working 25% OT), 140k.
-Your own boss. See the other reviews as this can go either way. If you have a good SPE and they trust your work (because its good), you basically work for yourself.
-Work from home and live anywhere in the US. This is an absolutely insane perk. I live somewhere tropical now.

    Cons

-The only con I can think of is the job can get mundane. That being said, with the insane flexiblity and good salary this job offers, you have plenty of time to spice up your life while not working.
-Its hard to objectively rate this job, as the mileage will vary considerably. Being good at reading, writing, and arguing, and crafting good actions, is not the easiest work for some people. Some engineers are simply not cut out for this job. You have to be extremely self-motivated, but once you get in the groove, and solidify good habits of staying ahead, its a very low stress job.
