I worked at Union Bank N.A. full-time (More than 5 years)

Pros

Great people, especially those who have been with the bank for many years. Fair benefits and an actual pension plan. Great work/life balance.

Cons

Infusion of managers from outside have dramatically changed the culture, as well as sending the message that outside talent is valued above internal promotion. Upper management pays scant attention to the activities and decisions being made under them, and the culture has become one of "managing up" the organization. This, combined with the dramatic changes with the MUFG merger makes for a strongly political organizational style.

Advice to Management

Take a page from HP and do a little "management by walking around". Invest in learning what your subordinates are actually doing, not just what they say they are doing. Try talking to employees in a context of safety from political reprisals, and you might be surprised what you learn.

    Cons

    company values, office culture, leadership

    Advice to Management

Lower level management need to be on the same page with the company objectives. There seems to be a large disconnect between where the company is trying to go and the people implemented at ground level.

I worked at Union Bank N.A. as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

During my short stint at Union Bank, I enjoyed the work, the environment, and the people I interacted with daily. Environment was very laid-back and friendly. Contractors were treated as part of the team. Telecommuting was allowed. Free Peets coffee.

    Cons

Senior management seemed slow in decision making, and there seemed to be a bit of bureaucratic red tape going on. Fortunately, I was not directly impacted by any of it. Also, technology is pretty antiquated and could stand to be upgraded (i.e. still using old overlay technology for customer letters, still on Windows XP, etc.).
