I worked at United Way full-time (Less than a year)

Pros

Co-workers in other departments were amazing. Generous, polite, helpful and always willing to help out in any capacity.

Cons

Management refused to offer training to sub-ordinate but always faulted employee for not knowing particular programs to complete assignments.

Advice to Management

If a new employee is unhappy - actually listen and not sweep it under the carpet and blame them. A new person is a true reflection of the department.

    Pros

    Working with high level CEOs and Community Leaders. Great way to learn basic fundraising and program management skills.

    Cons

    Significant burn-out. Role becomes redundant after a few campaign seasons.

    Advice to Management

    Create more room for training staff and grooming them to serve in larger capacities within the organization.

    Pros

    Great work-life balance is the best part of the job. Working at UWMC also allows you to meet a lot of great people and participate in various community/volunteer/networking activities with people from all over chicago

    Cons

    Direction from leadership very unclear, turnover is atrocious. little/no training. No talent development, very little opportunity for advancement. 9 CEO's in the last 27 years.
