I have been working at UnitedHealth Group full-time (More than 8 years)

Pros

Some spaces within United Health Group enable a great deal of growth due to the challenges of such a large organization and how it has come together through acquisition. For the right person, there are endless opportunities to seek out new challenges.

Cons

The breadth of organizations make it challenging to step back and see the full picture. Too often it seems that the answer that looks good is enough and it can be a real struggle to get people past the first impression to the real problems which are much harder to solve for without tough choices.

Advice to Management

Greater attention needs to be paid across the board to bloated areas of the organization to avoid cost cutting in areas which are as lean as they can be.

I worked at UnitedHealth Group full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Good, financially stable company.
    - When people ask where you work, they've heard of UHC so you don't have to explain it.
    - Salary is decent.

    Cons

    - Leadership in UHC Community and State is just awful. Horrid. It's the epitome of a "good ol' boy network." A bunch of arrogant suits making decisions without knowing what's really going on.
    - The Chief Marketing Officer is ruthless, condescending and one of the most despicable people I've ever had to work for or even be around. He had this reputation in Minneapolis long before they hired him. Nice vetting process.
    - Senior Leadership have degrees from University of Chicago, Oxford, Berkeley...but don't let that fool you. They believe that they are the only smart ones in the company and ignore others' input, making them as stupid as a community college night school dropout.
    - They say it's about "helping people live healthier lives". In all of the leadership meetings I attended, it wasn't ever about healthier people...it was about "less costly people." It's about the bottom line.
    - Unless you work in Minnetonka, you aren't taken seriously.

    Advice to Management

It's a small world, this healthcare business. Keep earning your reputations and when the UHC reaper comes for you, see if you land on your feet in the healthcare business. Karma is a beautiful thing.

    Pros

Good growth and learning opportunities, good raises if you're a high performer, good management but it all depends on what department/team you're in as I've heard other departments can be a nightmare. Wish they were more willing to promote on the basis of skill and not on the basis of how long you've been there.

    Cons

Generally don't hire young, new people

    Advice to Management

Take a chance on fresh graduates and train them up.
