I have been working at UnitedHealth Group full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

UnitedHelath Group offers diverse job opportunities in almost every field of study. Benefit packages are also varied and the company attempts to improve offerings based on employee needs. The company's overall mission of "Helping people to live healthier lives" is sincere and the company attempts to execute this mission with integrity, ethics and compassion.

    Cons

The application of the SixSigma methodology within the Specialty Benefits divisions is somewhat twisted. Metrics are the foundation for any type of movement or promo ability within the company although metrics are applied to faulty systems and processes beyond the control of the individual the metrics are applied to. Promotion from within is encouraged but opportunity is constrained by application of a metrics SixSigma metrics system inappropriately executed regardless of an individuals skillset or prior experience. Once hired in a position, prior experience becomes somewhat null as to promo ability. If promoted, one is promoted to the level of incompetence. the Peter Principle is alive and well at UnitedHelath Group

Infrastructure in systems and technologies has not kept pace with company acquisitions. Poor choices in technology platforms with minimal foresight for company growth impede the success of the employee.

Turnover is excessive. Resources are invested in new hire training classes on an ongoing basis with minimal investment in any type of additional or in depth training for current skill sets. coaching is relatively impersonal via coaching forms through a virtual portal or written feedback. Verbal coaching and feedback is scheduled and focused on individual metric scoring.

    Advice to Management

Invest in the people you have, invest in the skillsets available. A tremendous amount of money goes into the hiring process and initial training with almost no on-going personal training. It seems the mentality of management is it is easier to funnel quantity through training then invest in quality of the existing workforce. Hire for the future, invest in your people, match skillset with opportunity.

Apply the same long-term strategy in acquisitions to resources technology infrastructure and human capital.

I have been working at UnitedHealth Group full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

They offer the opportunity to telecommute. Good amount of vacation and flexible hours. Opportunities to work in different positions over the course of ones career.

    Cons

There's inconsistencies with regards to pay and workplace practices across various organizations. Business required overtime can become tedious as it occurs most of the year.

    Advice to Management

Need closer eyes on middle management.
