I worked at University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Because units (academic, research, clinical areas) are so autonomous, the quality of your work experience is dependent on what unit you're in. In the academic area, the department chairs have a lot of influence on the culture and working environment. Benefits, especially retirement matching and insurance, are quite good.

    Cons

Again, the variability of the work experience in different units is the big issue. People who have department chairs or unit leaders who are not effective managers tend to suffer from significant morale problems. Budget concerns in the academic health care sector (not just at UAMS) add to the sense of tension in the workplace.

    Advice to Management

Identifying poor managers and doing more than the standard HR "leadership workshop" but some real development with them (or getting them out of supervisory roles) would be very helpful in some units.

    Pros

Good benefits, and generally good work-life balance. The facilities are always improving and in its areas of focus it is truly excellent.

    Cons

It's a large public teaching hospital in a fairly large metropolitan area. The cons are all the usual challenges that comes with these sort of institutions.
