I have been working at University of Calgary full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

There are excellent flexible medical benefits as well as education benefits for the employee and family members. Staff receive a higher than average amount of vacation days (15 to start for unionized staff and 20 for management) plus other flexible days. The organization is closed between Christmas and New Years - employees don't have to use their vacation allotment in order to get this time off. For the most part, work-life balance is well supported by leadership.

    Cons

Salaries are not competitive, particularly for management staff (non-union and non-faculty). Rewards and recognition are sparse and the performance evaluation system is poorly designed and executed. It is supposed to be tied to "pay for performance"; however, the management group rarely sees salary increases and the results of evaluations can be skewed in order to avoid increasing compensation. Spending is not as transparent as senior leadership would have staff and the public believe, and although accountability has been promoted as a priority, it doesn't seem to be as holistic as intended.

    Advice to Management

Recognize management staff with market comparable salaries and annual increases; improve the performance evaluation system and hold leadership accountable for how they evaluate and compensate employees.
