I have been working at University of California Berkeley part-time (Less than a year)

Pros

Great location, great campus, food.

Cons

Little oversight of teachers. Taught multiple classes and never once met with or was observed by a full-time faculty member.

I worked at University of California Berkeley full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Berkeley truly can be a fantastic place, and most of the people there really want it to be. They are an incredible amount of fantastic people at the middle and lower levels in my experience.

    Cons

They seem to love to promote mediocrity and really ignore the stars at the middle level. They may talk the talk, but no one at the upper levels really seems to have a real plan on where to get to where they want to be. Pay very low compared to conference and national standards - especially if taking into consideration area cost of living.

    Advice to Management

Don't just talk about being there for the students. Take some time to pull out of the clouds and really see what's going on at the ground level, take a look around to see where it should be, and actually put together a plan on how to do it - then actually follow through! By the way, in order to do this you're going to have to support the people that actually do the ground work and work directly with the students - you can't ignore them!

I worked at University of California Berkeley full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

We were allowed lots of digression to run programs as we saw fit. There is a lot of opportunity to learn new skills. The company culture is great.

    Cons

Low rate of incumbent staff means there is little example for to know what they are looking for.

    Advice to Management

Try to get staff to return multiple years in a row.
