Pros

Relaxed, fairly friendly department with opportunities to maintain a healthy work - life balance. Location in beautiful Santa Barbara is a big draw.

Cons

Building facilities are aging and subpar.
The high cost of living in Santa Barbara (particularly the rent) makes it a challenge to live on the wages paid to graduate student researchers.
Budget cuts have reduced the number of invited seminar speakers in recent years, and faculty tend to show an interested in departmental events (seminars, etc.) only if they pertain to their particular area of research.

    Pros

The location is great and so are the facilities that are provided. The most beneficial part about working here is the opportunity to work with great minds.

    Cons

The salary for a student researchers is just enough to get buy with food and living expenses. You cannot really ask for more since you are working towards your education.

    Advice to Management

I am very satisfied with my work at the University of California. Some opportunities for graduate students to begin investing financially in their future would be a great addition.
