I worked at University of Illinois at Chicago part-time

    Pros

You learn a lot of office practices and software that can be useful in the long run. You're exposed to an academic environment and it sets you up for increasing your earning potential. The work tends to be relatively simple once you get the hang of it. There's still a lot of flexibility to when you start your day and when/how you get training

    Cons

Work comes in spurts. There are days when you are bored and days when you are swamped. There are a lot of political undercurrents that can put a person's job in jeopardy. Racism and sexism are such a huge part of daily operations it's sickening. There is no mercy for clerical errors and no formal training if you don't have enough 'friends' in high places. It's a bad place to work if you're just starting out. Pitiable salaries for high stress jobs.

    Advice to Management

Stop rewarding bad behavior. Support your staff with proper training and curb racist and sexist behaviors and comments. Don't blame the victim. Look at problems objectively and stop scapegoating your subordinates.

    Cons

low salary, no scope of growth, very saturated in terms of career growth. management is very slow and sluggish and not aggressive in pursuing opportunities
