Pros

Lots of money available for travelling to conferences. (I was never denied funding for this.) Open atmosphere, interesting people, pleasant and centrally-located campus.

Cons

Disappointing support of the senate for the universal nature of universities, namely the proposed closing of certain academic departments in 2008/9 due to their lack of research funding income.

Lack of career support for PhD/RA researchers (but this is an issue common to most universities).

Advice to Management

Within any organisation there are profitable and unprofitable departments, and the former have to support the latter or else the whole organisation is threatened.

Some "career gap funding" for PhD/RA researchers, funded by the university, would keep talented researchers at the university while applying for grants and continuing to contribute to the academic standing of the university.

I worked at University of Liverpool full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Regular pay on a nationally competitive basis, a city that has a good offer in cultural activities and sports. The University is in the city centre with easy public transport.

    Cons

University of Liverpool is a university which still today, after 15 years of continuous declared 'efforts' has not made progress in areas such as ethics, quality of research, staff and student recruitment.

    Advice to Management

Replace all senior management with truly qualified people who know the education industry from the inside. How are able to make a difference between mediocre and cheap investments and expensive but high quality investment which will pay in the long term.
