I have been working at University of Maryland full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good benefits and a lot of flexibility if you are on the Faculty or Administrative side of things. Great deal of autonomy to define your job as you go and fit it to your strengths, at least in my experience.

    Cons

Insane bureaucracy. We've had salaries frozen for several years and furloughs. There is an entrenched difference between "Faculty and Admin" and "Staff" - - Staff positions are like a permanent underclass, with few benefits and horrible inequities.

    Advice to Management

Work on making things more equitable for the staff positions.

    Cons

not enough incentives to do science. Sometimes there is negative competition between peer scientists.
