I have been working at University of Michigan full-time (More than 5 years)

Pros

Flexible hours
Generally hands off management (for my job)
Highly intellectually stimulating
Great co-workers

Cons

Researchers who lead big projects need to learn how to manage people and teams
IT support work can vary a lot in degree of pain (e.g. non-existent or inappropriate resource to accomplish goals)
Lack of leadership leads to continual doubt about priorities, expectations and so on

Advice to Management

Generally, researchers and PI's need support when they try to run big projects - team leadership training for example.

    Approves of CEO

    Pros

    1) Excellent work/life balance: there is no push to work long hours
    2) Supervisors are happy to support requests for tuition reimbursement
    3) Once hired, there are many opportunities to move within the University

    Cons

    1) The university is extremely decentralized, making many attempts at change nearly impossible because of the number of potential veto-points
    2) The pay is not great

    Advice to Management

Make a point of encouraging employees in non-leadership positions to suggest and take ownership of operational changes. The bureaucracy stifles a lot of good ideas.
