I worked at University of Pennsylvania full-time (More than 5 years)

Pros

Nice and smart people to work with; Overall low-pressure environment, yet many opportunities to learn and grow; good benefits which compensate the paychecks; Flexible work style. Keep in mind that it's very big organization, and things may vary depending on the specific school/department.

Cons

Non-competitive pay. Politics can be around, at times.

I worked at University of Pennsylvania full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The take-home salary wasn't that high, but the benefits (taking classes for free, health care, etc) made it very comfortable.
In general the work environment is laid back, and the work rarely follows you home.
For someone with a family it's a great place to work.

    Cons

It's an enormous university with tons of red tape and complicated intradepartment politics. Getting anything done that involves something out of the ordinary can be a nightmare.
You end up finding people who aren't good at their jobs/won't do their jobs, but don't get disciplined for it because they've been around so long.
Management is usually out of touch with the reality of what their people do.

    Advice to Management

Good management is involved with the ground work and ought to be someone people will ask for help if they have a problem. Good management is involved enough to see when team members are not pulling their weight because they are lazy or don't know how-- and then do something about it. Good management listens to new ideas and takes risks sometimes.

  2. "Very relaxed yet very fulfilling."

I have been working at University of Pennsylvania part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Once you're trained, you're in it for the long haul. The job is very relaxed, and you have the chance to be a part of something scientifically significant!

    Cons

As a part time employee, wages aren't very high. However, if you go full time, they are fair.
