I worked at University of Tennessee full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Software development in a small university department is like being in a small startup. You get to do a little of everything, often with a lot of latitude. You can make an immediate and visible contribution, and work directly on projects that see immediate use. The team and work environment was just excellent for me. Free college courses for credit is attractive to some. It also lacks the frantic pace of industry - a good work/life balance.

    Cons

There was no real career development path, at least for me. There is free training, but for a software developer that seemed almost irrelevant. I learned more on the job day-to-day. While I was there, there was so much turnover in upper management that I couldn't keep it straight, and quickly stopped caring about the university outside of my department.
