Pros

The University is a free place for research and engineering, a lot of resources to use and a lot of smart people to work with

Cons

Typically you won't get too much money and according to the level of the university, most people cannot achieve too much in their research, most likely a educational preparation for job market.

I have been working at University of Texas at Austin full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

They are flexible and work with you in maintaining a work/life balance for the most part. They are not time clock hawks and allow you the freedom to come and go as long as results are seen. I received lots of training.

    Cons

I haven't been able to utilize said training after receiving it. Only management's ideas, or those of others that fall in line with management's ideas are recognized. The pay is substandard, and only a few perks.

    Advice to Management

Be more mature and less sneaky. Talk upfront and not be such passive/aggressive backstabbers.

    Pros

Training opportunities, great coworkers, nice life/work balance, flexibility, great health benefits and paid time off during winter break.

    Cons

Salaries are lower, even with lots of experience and education. Large raises are very rare. No holiday bonus, etc.
