I have been working at University of Toronto as an intern (Less than a year)

Pros

- Hands on exposure to R&D
- Surrounded by dedicated Master's and PhD candidates who are very bright and dedicated
- Possibility to write research papers for technical/science journals
- Not a lot of stress

Cons

- Low pay
- Can get caught up doing menial jobs sometimes
- The overall experience strongly influenced by the Professor heading the research lab (Choose the Professor wisely)

Advice to Management

- Not all undergraduate research assistants are cheap labor, some of them have great ideas (again, this varies from Prof. to Prof. Some value undergrads a lot, some are opposite)

I have been working at University of Toronto full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Smart people, great benefits, vacation, flex-time, interesting work. The software projects have real world applications and you can see their benefits.

    Cons

Depends a lot on your supervisor if you get opportunities to perform and show what you can do. Significant bureaucracy - things take forever to get agreement and decisions to be made. Resources can be scarce and technology can be slow to change.

    Advice to Management

Delegate! Trust in your employee's abilities and give them some credit. They will rise to your expectations.
