I have been working at University of Toronto as a contractor (More than a year)

Pros

Stable organization with great benefits - excellent for long-term commitment.

Cons

Large complex environment, not really fast-paced, but as many claim, but ambles along at a relatively stable rate with highs and lows.

Advice to Management

Need better understanding of and respect for lower levels in the organization whose work is as important as the senior level in supporting and driving the work and results forward.

I worked at University of Toronto as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Overall, I had a good experience being a teaching assistant, but I think this experience really depends on the department one is working for. There were opportunities to grow your teaching skills, and the ability to have free reign on teaching style. Also, the pay was very good! Helped me get through grad school.

    Cons

The worst part of this position was the professor I worked under. He was entirely incompetent and the department couldn't do anything to correct his behaviour, it was cause for a stressful experience. Again, this is really dependent on the department you work for but overall bureaucracy is rampant at the University of Toronto --don't underestimate their inability to change!

    Advice to Management

Real reprimands need to be in place for professors who are not performing. Forget the politics, make sure students are receiving the education they pay for. Ultimately, poor hires result in years of bad classes for students.
