I worked at University of Washington full-time (More than 5 years)

Pros

Good time-off, good hours, world-changing research projects

Cons

As with all academic positions, salary is little below industry (but compensated for with amazing PTO, flexible hours, and medical costs).

I worked at University of Washington full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I worked in the department of genome sciences and the quality of the work there was top-notch nearly across the board. Numerous top-tier academics and superb access to resources. Individual experiences will depend on the position and the lab, but I suspect that most people looking for a high powered academic job won't be disappointed by the genome sciences dept.

    Cons

It's a huge state institution with all of the headaches that normally come with such places - there's a fair amount of red tape, and attempting to change some policy or procedure is likely impossible. Parking near campus is close to impossible, and the buses don't typically run on time.

  2. "Can be great but highly dependent on who you work for. My rating is 3.5"

I worked at University of Washington full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

good benefits, innovative research, flexible schedule, excellent reputation

    Cons

a tendency for management to protect research faculty over middle-management staff regardless of how inept some faculty are in the management of their staff. To be fair, a tendency to protect "more valuable staff" is not unusual-UW is simply doing what you would expect. In my particular group, complacency and loyalty were valued assets more so than others.

    Advice to Management

Please teach the faculty how to be managers. It'll make the university that much better.
